The last words (by Nicolas Chretien)
Today my startup failed.
Sell diamonds in medicine packaging boxes and simultaneous launch nine pharmaceutical brands was a crazy idea. We did it with passion, we failed. To all my amazing team, don’t be sad or disappointed, just be proud of what we have accomplished. It has been an incredible two years journey.
Building any business is hard, but only one small team was crazy enough to believe this was possible. Some people told us that we were the rebels, the troublemakers of the diamond industry, it was not important. The most important is that nobody tried to stop us or discourage us. We were right, Generic Diamond was a crazy cool idea.
It was an incredible journey because what we did, we did it all internally. The creation of nine brands, the packaging, the marketing, the development and launch of 9 websites… You have been the best web designers, best graphists, best copyrighters, best advertisers, best coders and the result has been just amazing. Amazing of details, amazing of meaning, amazing of courage. Be really proud of what you did.
I will remember forever our open sky meeting room at the foot of the Singapore national library, our drinks, our food and the raining days. I miss that so much. I will remember forever our first printed packaging after 6 monts of development, the first website visitors seen on google analytics or the day where my two years old son pressed the enter button of my computer to launch the Indiegogo campaign.
But sorry, sorry because as a leader, I’m a failed startup entrepreneur who was not able to meet investors. I tried and later I gave up. My biggest regret, no to be able to see a pop-up pharmacy in New York selling 24-24H remedes for love ache…. My saddest day, end of June, when I ordered to destroy the 10,000 medecine boxes, to close our wharehouse in Singapore and sign the application for striking-off of Generic Diamond.
This journey takes me two years of my life. If you fail, fail fast. Clean your head as soon as possible and get back into the ring. Thuta, Lynette, Surya, Jeff, Valérie, Alizé, Za, Stephane, I could not have done this without you.
And to everyone who has supported us over the past 2 years, from the bottom of my heart: thank you.
